Iran arrive in North America as Asia’s most established World Cup nation, making their seventh appearance at the tournament — and their fourth in a row. Here’s everything the All Whites need to know about the team standing between them and a historic opening win.

A Squad Built on Domestic Strength

Iran’s Football Federation announced their 26-man squad on June 1, with head coach Amir Ghalenoei naming a group heavy with players from the Iranian domestic league. Of the 26 selected, the majority ply their trade in the Persian Gulf Pro League, giving the squad a familiar, well-drilled shape built on club chemistry.

The standout name, as ever, is Mehdi Taremi. The world-class striker is Iran’s captain, talisman, and most dangerous attacking threat, bringing elite European pedigree to their frontline. Alongside him, Alireza Jahanbakhsh — who has built a reputation across European football including spells in the Premier League — provides creative quality from wide areas.

    7th
World Cup Appearance

    4
Consecutive Tournaments

    Top
Asian Qualifying Group

The Big Absence: Azmoun Left Out

The most talked-about selection decision is the omission of Sardar Azmoun. With 91 international caps and 57 goals, Azmoun is one of the most prolific strikers in Iranian football history — yet he did not make the squad, and was not even included in the preliminary selection pool.

Reports suggest the exclusion may be politically motivated. Azmoun reportedly posted a photo meeting with Dubai’s ruler on his personal social media, a move said to have drawn the ire of the Iranian government. Whether football or politics drove the decision, the absence of a striker of his calibre is a significant blow to Iran’s attacking options.

“We want to achieve the first knockout stage qualification in our history. We are ready.”

  — Amir Ghalenoei, Iran Head Coach

Logistical Hurdle Cleared

Iran’s preparation for this World Cup has been anything but straightforward. The deteriorating security situation in the Middle East led to significant logistical uncertainty and intense discussions over their travel plans. However, Team Melli successfully secured their initially planned base camp in Tucson, Arizona, allowing them to finalise their North American preparations despite the off-field distractions.

How Do They Play?

Iran under Ghalenoei are organised, defensively disciplined, and difficult to break down. They topped their group in the final round of Asian qualifying, conceding very few goals along the way. They are not a side that will open up and invite pressure.

Expect Iran to sit deep, be compact, and look to hit on the counter through Taremi’s movement and the pace of their wide players. Critically, Iran are not afraid to go direct — long balls into Taremi’s chest, flick-ons for runners, quick transitions. It is a style built on efficiency rather than beauty, and it works.

What the Haiti Warm-Up Revealed

New Zealand’s pre-tournament friendly against Haiti on June 3 offered some telling signs — and some genuine concerns ahead of the Iran clash.

The All Whites struggled to close down Haiti’s ball carriers with urgency, allowing far too much time on the ball in deeper areas. More worrying was the lack of a clear pressing structure in the front line, combined with a defensive line that sat too deep, opening up a wide channel in midfield that Haiti exploited repeatedly.

Against Iran, those issues become critical. Taremi thrives on exactly this kind of space — a deep defensive line gives him room to receive, turn, and drive. Ghalenoei’s side will also go direct early and often, testing New Zealand’s aerial ability and transition defending.

Darren Bazeley’s side face a clear decision before June 16: establish a coherent high press to disrupt Iran’s build-up, or sit in a disciplined low block and deny the space behind. There is no safe middle ground. The Haiti performance showed that uncertainty in structure is the one thing New Zealand cannot afford against a team as experienced as Iran.

The Verdict for New Zealand

Iran are the most experienced team in Group G when it comes to World Cup football. They know how to manage games, absorb pressure, and make the most of their moments. But they arrive with question marks — logistical disruption, a politically charged squad selection, and no Azmoun.

For the All Whites, this is winnable. It won’t be easy. But June 16 at SoFi Stadium could be the day New Zealand wins a World Cup game for the very first time — if they fix what Haiti exposed.

Know Your Opponent

Read our full All Whites World Cup 2026 guide — fixtures, squad analysis, and everything you need ahead of the tournament.

  Read the Full Guide →

New Zealand’s first opponent at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is no easy task.
